ACTIVITY

Leading player in the global car industry.

The project at a glance

In 2019, one of the world’s largest car manufacturers, which had been using SAP ECC6 with Oracle databases on x86 infrastructure for a number of years, decided to migrate to the latest SAP Hana database, and at the same time replace its aging and near-saturated x86 infrastructures.

Following a supplier consultation process, the team in charge of SAP infrastructure opted for Hardis Group’s proposal to replace the x86 systems with IBM Power9 for SAP Hana, resulting in a more robust solution and simpler routine operation.

Contexte et objectif

PROJECT OBJECTIVES

  • Replace an aging and near-saturated Oracle/x86 architecture.
  • Design a proprietary new physical infrastructure capable of hosting multiple virtual systems, each with between 1 and 8 TB of Hana RAM.
  • Simplify operation while retaining the Red Hat operating system to facilitate adoption by the in-house SAP infrastructure team.

WORK PERFORMED

  • Define the target infrastructure for the SAP on Hana applications
  • Migrate all of the customer’s existing SAP ECC6 Oracle systems to the SAP Hana version
  • Deploy an IBM Power E980 and E950 for SAP Hana server-based infrastructure with IBM FlashSystem SAN storage
Missions réalisées

CHOSEN SOLUTIONS

  • Infrastructure: IBM Power E980/E950 for SAP Hana servers and IBM FlashSystem SAN storage
Virtualization and deployment hypervisor: IBM PowerVM/PowerVC
OS: Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8.x
Bénéfices

BENEFITS

  • Simplified, robust architecture: all SAP on Hana systems are consolidated on a small number of physical machines with significant RAM capacity.
  • Rapid Oracle-to-Hana database migration (limiting production downtime), made possible by the high performance of IBM Power9 .
  • Persistent memory (PEM) technology: allows a system to be restarted in order to apply an update with no need to unload the Hana base from RAM.
  • PowerVC portal: simplified virtual machine provisioning and administration.
